COLLEGE

Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services Scholarship

This scholarship may be awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who are full-time students who have been accepted into one of the seven academic departments in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services; have junior or senior standing (applies to undergraduate recipients only); demonstrates financial need. All applications for this scholarship must provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the department where they are enrolled who can demonstrate the academic potential and financial need of the student.

T. Clair and Enid Johnson Brown Scholarship Endowment Fund

This scholarship may be awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who are full-time students and have been accepted into one of the seven academic departments in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services; have junior or senior standing (applies to undergraduate recipients only); demonstrates financial need; demonstrates academic potential as evidenced by having attained a minimum cumulative gpa of 3.0--undergraduate recipient, and 3.5 for the graduate recipient. All applications for this scholarship must provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the department where they are enrolled who can demonstrate the academic potential and financial need of the student.

Dale and Adele Young Scholarship

Established by Dale and Adele Young. Recipients should demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and personal integrity. This scholarship may be awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who are full-time students and have been accepted into one of the seven academic departments in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services. All applications for this scholarship must provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the department where they are enrolled who can demonstrate the academic potential and financial need of the student.

Helmut Hofmann Scholarship

This scholarship is for a student who is training to become a teacher or to pursue any other school-related career at either the secondary or elementary level in any department in the CEHS. Candidates must be students with a gpa of 3.2 and an entering senior or currently enrolled graduate student. Candidates must demonstrate leadership, financial need and personal integrity.

Simmons Family Foundation Scholarship

Candidates should be single parent students studying any discipline in the CEHS. Financial need is an important consideration.

Single Parent Scholarship

Awarded on an annual basis to single parent students who are majoring in the CEHS. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

TERREL H. BELL TEACHING INCENTIVE LOAN PROGRAM

In 1984, the Utah legislature enacted legislation which provides funds in the form of tuition scholarships for students pursuing certification as teachers in areas of shortage as designated by the Utah State Office of Education.  In return for aid in the Terrel H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan Program, recipients agree to teach in a Utah public school for a term equal to the combined terms of the Terrel H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan Program.

Criteria for the loan program are: 

            1)cumulative gpa of at least 3.0;

            2)completed 2 semesters of college coursework as of March 15/Sept 1;

            3)been admitted into the teacher education program at the time of application;

            4)have a teaching major in an area of critical shortage as designatedby the USOE.

Incoming freshman can apply for the program through their high school principal or counselor.  Awards can be used for full-time or part-time (minimum of 6 credits) registration. Applicants must be Utah residents in order to qualify.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

You should contact department heads for all inquiries regarding assistantships and tuition waivers. Applications for university assistantships, fellowships, and all financial aid go through department offices. For a listing of fellowships and scholarships, consult a current Graduate Catalog.

Trisha Davis Creer Memorial Award

Established in memory of Trisha Davis Creer to encourage undergraduate students in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education to focus their research interests on young children and emergent literacy issues. Junior and Senior students in the program, carrying out independent research in the area of emergent literacy are eligible for this award.

The Joanne Lillywhite Christensen Endowment in Communicative Disorders

Established by Mrs. Ray L. Lillywhite in memory of her daughter, Joanne Lillywhite Christensen. These awards, known as Lillywhite Scholars, are awarded to either undergraduate or graduate students who achieve academic distinction in speech-language pathology.

Dean LeGrande Miller Scholarship in Communicative Disorders

Established by the Department to honor the memory of Dean LeGrande Miller who achieved his professional education despite extreme hardships in overcoming a neuromuscular disease. Awards are made annually to senior or graduate students majoring in communicative disorders, who have demonstrated academic excellence despite personal hardships or handicaps.

Leon G. and Faye Sonne Stucki Scholarship Endowment

Established by Leon G. and Faye Sonne Stucki; awards are made to students who have at least a junior class standing with a declared major in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education and a grade point average of 3.0 or better.

Lucile Kunz Yerger Scholarship

Established by the family of Lucile Kunz Yerger, the Lucile Kunz Yerger Scholarship is intended to be given to a student in speech-language pathology who has demonstrated outstanding clinical performance in their professional preparation.

COMD-DE Outstanding Senior Scholarships:

Next year’s senior students who demonstrate high academic performance, financial need and community service.

COMD-DE Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarships:

Next year’s 1st year graduate students in SLP, Audiology or Deaf Education who demonstrate high academic performance, financial need and community service.


ELEMENTARY EDUCATION


All applicants for scholarships in Elementary Education must meet the following criteria:

1. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 60 semester credits prior to applying for scholarships, with an overall grade point average (including transfer credits) of at least 3.5. (See Hales and Blair Scholarships for exception.)

2. Applicants must have completed Level II of the elementary education program by the end of Fall Semester.

3. Extension students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Additionally they must have completed Level II, be enrolled in Level II fall semester, or registered for Level II for spring semester.

4. Applicants must provide letter(s) of recommendation as indicated below:

a. a character reference
b. a recommendation from the student's college supervisor in Level II only if Level II was completed some place other than USU.

5. Recipients should plan to attend the Elementary Education Awards Program to acknowledge receipt of their scholarship.

6. It is expected that all recipients write a Thank-you letter to the donor, a copy is to be attached to their acceptance letter and kept on file.

Oral L. and Tacy C. Ballam Scholarship

Recipients should be graduates of a Cache Valley school. Preference will be given to outstanding non-traditional or disadvantaged senior students having financial need and for whom no other scholarship support is available.

Laurence and Florian Cazier Blackett

Established by Charles and Jonnie Blackett Bullen for a student who demonstrates financial need and personal integrity.


Karen Marie Murdock Blair Scholarship

Recipients should be a junior or senior majoring in Elementary Education with a GPA of at least 3.3. Preference will be given to a student who shows evidence of involvement in community service and who has an Emphasis in Language Arts.

Edith Bowen Scholarship

This scholarship is for junior, senior, and/or graduate students majoring in Elementary Education.

Myrtle Sowards DeHart Scholarship in Elementary Education

The recipient must exhibit a genuine love for children, sensitivity to their individual personal as well as academic needs, excellent personal mental health, the ability to relate in a positive way with parents and coworkers, and be a hard worker who is willing to put in the time and effort necessary to succeed as a teacher.

Clifford and Julie Manning Frye Scholarship

Awarded to an outstanding junior or senior student majoring in elementary education. Preference will be given to a Navajo student.

Lee and Barbara Hales Family Scholarship

Recipients should be junior or senior students in the Elementary Education Department. Preference given to Logan High School graduates with GPA between 2.75 and 3.5.

Arthur D. & Bonnie H. Jackson Scholarship

Recipients, who will be designated Jackson Scholars, must be students majoring in elementary education who demonstrate quality academic achievement, superior teaching potential and personal integrity.

Ina W. Kurzhals Scholarship

Scholarship recipients should have a high scholastic record and show professional promise in the area of study.

Elaine Mecham McEvoy Scholarship

Established by Roger McEvoy in memory of his wife. This scholarship is for students majoring in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education who are dependents of USU faculty or staff members. Candidates must demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and personal integrity.

Bonnie Dansie Parkin Scholarship

Candidates for this scholarship should be committed to earning a degree in Early Childhood Education, have a gpa of 3.0 or better and show financial need.

Michael J. and Patricia A. Pretti Family Scholarship

Candidates should be accepted into the Department of Elementary Education and demonstrate financial need.

Chloe Priday Stewart Memorial Fund

Awarded to an outstanding junior or senior student majoring in elementary education.

Thomas Alva Taylor Scholarship

Recipients of this scholarship, known as Taylor Scholars, shall be outstanding male senior or graduate students majoring in Elementary Education.

Gwendolyn Lund Vest and Gayle Pixton Vest Scholarship

Candidates must be entering their senior year in the Elementary Education program and must complete their final student teaching experience during the time they are receiving financial support from this award. Candidates must demonstrate financial need, academic achievement, personal integrity, and have a serious commitment to school-aged children and quality teaching. Preference should be given to applicants who have demonstrated outstanding potential in the disciplines of early childhood education.

Alma E. and Lila Ralphs Watterson Scholarship

Established by Scott and Michele Watterson. Awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need and academic performance or promise.

Linda Ann McPherson Weeshoff Memorial Scholarship

Candidates for this scholarship should demonstrate financial need and academic performance or promise. Candidates should have strength of character, evidence of leadership potential and emotional maturity and stability. Preference will be given to students who have shown commitment to “Character Education” community involvement and performed community service.

Adele C. Young Scholarship

Recipients of the Young scholarship should demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and personal integrity.

 

FAMILY, CONSUMER AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT


1. The department asks that all undergraduate recipients take a minimum of 13 credit hours, but no more than 18

2. It is expected that all recipients write a Thank-you letter to the donor, a copy is to be attached to their acceptance letter and kept on file.

3. It is also expected that all recipients attend a reception held to honor the donors as well as the scholarship recipients.

Edna Hatch Baker Endowment (Class of 1925)

Edna has a great love for children and concern for their well-being. For this reason she has established this scholarship to help prepare young people to become better parents, or teach in high school. The recipient of this scholarship should demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and personal integrity. Recipients must be either Family, Consumer, and Human Development majors or Family Consumer Sciences majors.

Emily Elder Barrus Scholarship

Preference given to students with a focus in child development; scholarship award based on merit, with preference given to need, minimum gpa of 3.0.

Joan F. Budge

Family, friends, and colleagues established this scholarship to assist future generations of students in Family, Consumer, and Human Development. Joan was the Administrative Secretary in the College of Family Life Dean’s Office at the time of her death. Recipients of this scholarship should demonstrate financial need, personal integrity, and average academic achievement.

Jean Chandler Christensen Scholarship

Recipient must be a junior or senior enrolled in the Family and Consumer Science major of the FCHD Department and show financial need, personal integrity and have academic promise.

Ruth Swenson Eyre (Class of 1951) Early Childhood Education Scholarship

Presented each year to an undergraduate student majoring in Early Childhood Education and with special interest in Alternative Preschool and Day-care Curricula which emphasize and enhance the emotional and social growth of children. The scholarship was established by Mrs. Eyre’s sons.

Family Life Alumni Scholarship

Recipients of this scholarship must be majors in the Department of Family, Consumer, and Human Development, and show financial need, personal integrity and have academic promise.

William H. and Stella Young Griffiths Scholarship Fund

Recipient must be in the upper 25% of the class in the majors of the field of Family, Consumer, and Human Development. Preference is given to blood relatives of Mrs. Griffiths in these majors.

Edith Nyman Gunnell Scholarship

Preference given to a junior or senior majoring in FCS with financial need. Recipient must be enrolled in and pursuing coursework each semester in Family and Consumer Sciences in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services. The recipient must enroll for and complete at least 13 but not more than 18 credit hours and maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average each semester.

Charles N. & Margaret B. Merkley

Recipients of this scholarship should demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and personal integrity. They shall be committed to a career in one of the fields encompassed by their course of study in the FCHD Department. Recipients must be upper class or graduate students.

Phi Upsilon Omicron Endowment

Recipients of this scholarship must be majors in the Department of Family, Consumer, and Human Development; be a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society; and show financial need and personal integrity.

Harriet Ann Richards Rasmussen Scholarship

Candidates must have a focus of study in child development or family related studies. The award will be made based on merit, with preference given to need.

Marie Stowell Shoup

This award will be given to upper class women majoring in FCS or FCHD in the Family, Consumer, and Human Development Department. Recipient shall have a “B” GPA or better and show financial need. The scholarship was established by her husband and their daughters.

Helen Lower Simmons (Class of 1952)

Recipients of this scholarship must be a major in the department of Family, Consumer, and Human Development and show financial need, personal integrity and have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Phyllis R. Snow Memorial Endowment

Recipient must be a major in the department of Family, Consumer, and Human Development. The recipient must also demonstrate financial need and academic achievement.

Ila Smith Taggart

This scholarship was established by Spencer L. and Ila Smith Taggart to assist future generations of students at Utah State University. Recipients must be majors in the FCHD Department and should demonstrate academic achievement and financial need.

Gregory Carl Trevers (Class of 1972) Memorial Endowment

A scholarship for undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of family relationships or human development established by Cherie and Mercer Trevers and Loretta Trevers. Recipients should demonstrate academic achievement and financial need.

Helen Maughan Walker

Recipients should be a junior or senior enrolled in Family, Consumer, and Human Development. Recipients should also demonstrate academic achievement and show financial need. They should have the desire to further their careers using their skills and educations from their degrees.

Dr. Dale & Adele Christensen Young

This scholarship was established by Dr. Dale and Adele Young to assist students in the department that demonstrate superior potential, quality academic achievement, financial need, personal integrity, and a high sense of social responsibility.


Graduate Fellowships

Dr. Don C. Carter Graduate Fellowship

This scholarship is in recognition of Dr. Carter’s professional excellence in both child development and family relations. Applicants must be matriculated graduate students majoring in Family, Consumer, and Human Development and shall have demonstrated an exemplary scholastic record and potential for making an outstanding impact in the field of child development and family relations.

Brent C. and Kevon C. Miller Graduate Student Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Kevon and Brent Miller to support students in the Department of Family, Consumer and Human Development, where Brent served as a faculty member and department head. Recipients shall be selected from graduate students in the department whose specialization is marriage, family, or adolescent development, and who demonstrate academic achievement, and personal integrity.

Phyllis R. Snow Graduate

Recipients must be graduate students majoring in Family, Consumer, and Human Development. Recipients shall have demonstrated academic achievement, qualities of leadership, and potential to contribute significantly in their field of study

Leah D. Widtsoe Fellowship

Established by Dr. Virginia Cutler in honor of Leah D. Widtsoe. Recipients of this fellowship must be majors in the FCHD department and should demonstrate high academic achievement professional promise, personal integrity, and high sense of social and moral responsibility. Recipients must be seniors ready to begin their graduate work in our department; or graduate students who are continuing graduate work in the department; or graduate transfer students wanting to register in our department.

 

HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND RECREATION

Mary Jane Faylor Scholarship

This scholarship is for junior women students majoring in Physical Education who have attained a high scholarship and ethical standard and involved in departmental, campus, and community activities.

H. B. and Ethel Hunsaker Scholarship

This scholarship is for student(s) majoring in HPER who have attained a high scholarship and ethical standard and are involved in departmental, campus, and community activities.

Elizabeth Bullock Haderlie Scholarship

For a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior student, preferably female, who is majoring in Physical Education.

Dick Motta Scholarship

This scholarship is for junior or senior students majoring in Physical Education teaching with a coaching emphasis. Candidates must demonstrate academic achievement, financial need & personal integrity.

Olympic Scholarship

Candidates must be majoring in one of the following fields: Parks and Recreation with minimum 3.0 GPA, Community Health with minimum 3.5 GPA, Exercise Science with minimum 3.5 GPA, Pre-Physical Therapy with minimum 3.5 GPA. The minimum GPA should be a cumulative average between all transcripts including transfer schools and first and second bachelors degrees. Candidates should also demonstrate financial need.


INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY


Wesley D. & Lucille S. Soulier Scholarship

This scholarship is for a graduate student in Instructional Technology. The recipients must be married students and demonstrate financial need. To make application, please contact the Department Head, Instructional Technology.

 

PSYCHOLOGY

Walter R. Borg Scholarship

This scholarship is for a student that has completed at least one year of graduate study in the Psychology Department and demonstrates academic achievement, financial need, and personal integrity. To make application, please contact the Department Head of Psychology.

Student Travel Scholarship in Psychology

For psychology students whose papers are accepted by the American Psychological Association to use as partial or full travel expenses to the annual meetings. To make application, please contact the Department Head of Psychology.

Elwin C. Nielsen Scholarship

This scholarship is for male or female graduate students who demonstrate exceptional talent in psychological assessment and psychotherapy/counseling. Candidates must demonstrate academic achievement financial need, and personal integrity. They must have completed their M.S. degree and have at least 15 semester hours of academic coursework remaining towards their Ph.D. excluding internship and dissertation hours.

Arden N & Phyllis J. Frandsen Scholarship

This scholarship is for students committed to earning a degree in Psychology.

 

SECONDARY EDUCATION

Eldon & Janice Drake Academic Scholarship for Juniors

This scholarship is for a junior student certifying in Secondary Education who has a composite teaching major in social studies, possesses high scholarship, and indicates potential for success as a teacher. All applicants for this scholarship must provide two letters of recommendation attesting to their potential success as a teacher. Letters should be attached to the application when submitted.

Ty and Bernice McCowin Scholarship

This scholarship is for a junior or senior student in Secondary Education with a social studies composite major. Preference will be given to a student with financial need whose high moral character can serve as a role model for secondary students.

Susan Williams Stephens Scholarship

This scholarship is for a male or female students in their junior or senior year who are majoring in English, have been accepted into the Teacher Education program and who have a gpa of at least 3.2. Candidates must demonstrate academic achievement financial need and personal integrity.


SPECIAL EDUCATION AND REHABILITATION

Matthew David Hillyard Endowment Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is for students in the Special Education Department.

Donald F. Kline Scholarship Endowment Fund

This scholarship is for an upper division or graduate student in the Department of Special Education who demonstrates superior academic achievement and has financial need.

Joseph Steven Meyrick Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is for a Special Education major, who has a disability or someone with a disability in his/her family and also has financial need. Students applying for this scholarship should address this criteria in their statement of need.

Rehabilitation Counseling Personnel Preparation Support Grants

These scholarships are funded by federal grants to the department. All Rehabilitation Counseling students may apply. Amount of awards vary. Contact department directly.

Leon G. and Faye Sonne Stucki Scholarship Endowment

Established by Leon G. and Faye Sonne Stucki; awards are made to students who have junior class standing with a declared major in Special Education and Rehabilitation and a grade point average of 3.0 or better.

Undergraduate Special Education Major Scholarship

Upper class Special Education majors are eligible, for this award.
