Objectives
The objective of the Health Education Specialist major is to train competent entry level health educators to work in public health, secondary schools, corporate/work-sites, non-profit agencies, and clinical settings. The health education program is dedicated to excellence in the practice of promoting individual, family, organizational, and community health. Additionally, the health education curriculum is geared to preparing graduating students to successfully sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) national exam, become competent professionals, and be prepared to enter graduate programs.
Outcomes
Based on the seven responsibilities and competencies for entry level health educators, graduates with a B.S. degree in the Health Education Specialist major will be able to:
- assess individual and community health needs using theoretically based planning models
- obtain health related data about social and cultural environments, growth and development factors, needs and interests
- distinguish between behaviors that foster and those that hinder well-being
- infer needs for health education on the basis of obtained primary and secondary data
- plan effective health education programs
- recruit community organizations, resources, people and potential participants for support and assistance in program planning
- develop age-appropriate program goals and objectives
- formulate appropriate and measurable program objectives
- design educational programs consistent with specified program objectives
- implement health education programs
- exhibit competence in carrying out planned educational programs
- infer enabling objectives as needed to implement instructional programs in specified settings
- select methods and media best suited to implement program plans for specified learners
- monitor educational programs, adjusting objectives and activities as necessary
- evaluate effectiveness of health education programs
- develop plans to assess achievements of programs objectives
- carry out evaluation plans
- interpret results of program evaluation
- infer implications from findings for future program planning
- coordinate provision of health education services
- develop a plan for coordinating health education services
- facilitate cooperation between and among levels of program personnel
- formulate practical modes of collaboration among health agencies and organizations
- organize in-service training programs for teachers, volunteers, and other interested personnel
- act as a resource person in health education

- establish effective consultative relationships with those requesting assistance in solving health-related problems
