Passing the Torch
Greetings "Old" Outreach Students! Are you SO excited to be back in class for one last week? We'll have a lunch on Monday with the "Newbie" outreach students. At that time I'd like each of you to dip into your savings and spend UP TO BUT NO MORE THAN $3.00 on a gift to give to one new outreach graduate student. You won't need to decide who to give it to until we meet and it really won't matter who gets your gift as long as all the Newbies get one. Please have some kind of a creative reason for giving the gift that ties somehow into graduate school. It can be funny or serious. Along with the bestowal of the gift you can give your sage advice to all the new "rookies". By so doing, the passing of the torch will take place from your group to the next, perpetuating outreach into infinity and beyond. I think that will make for an entertaining luncheon. Thanks.

ASHA Exam
Here is one way to register for the ASHA national exam. Thanks to the
student who submitted this.
First, go to asha.org and click on 'students' near the top. In the
drop-down box, click on 'Praxis Exam'. From that page, click on 'Praxis Exam
Registration' and that will take you to another ASHA page. Right under 'How
do I register?' there is a link titled 'REGISTER DIRECTLY WITH ETS'. Click
there and then follow the instructions. I've tried to go directly to the ETS
website but it's obnoxiously confusing with all of the tests they offer.
Going through ASHA's site makes it easier.

Praxis
Hi Outreach Students! Mackenzie asked about the Praxis exam. I thought I’d respond to you all. The Graduate Student Checklist has information about the exam and several other important items. This semester you need to complete all the items up through and including Group D. Even though Group E isn’t due until the end of next semester, you should take a look at the items in that group now because they address some of the questions you may have (like the Praxis). After doing so please let me know if you have additional questions. Thanks.
One more thing... Please move ahead quickly to schedule your defenses and then let me know when you are going to hold your defense so I can get a room scheduled for you. You should plan to bring a laptop to show your Power Point presentation to your committee. You can then hook it to one of our projectors if there is one available. If not, you can just use the monitor on your laptop as the display for your committee. If you are planning to use video please plan to show it on your computer as well. Thanks.

Culminating Presentations
I circulated a 2nd or 3rd or 4th tentative schedule to our faculty this morning and have received some feedback from some of them. I'm sure it's no big surprise that there just doesn't seem to be one schedule that works for everyone. We all just have several irons in the fire, don't we? One suggestion was made that we put the responsibility back on the students to make your own appointments for these presentations, the same way we do with our on-campus graduate students.
After searching for the magic schedule and not finding it, I agree with that suggestion. So, please email your committee members individually to find a time that works with the four of you (3 committee members and yourself). I'll attach a list of your committee members plus their contact information and the tentative schedule I've given them. You may want to keep the schedule as close to the one I've set as you can. My recommendation is that the presentations be held between April 1-18 and that they be scheduled for 1 1/2 hours each to provide time for equipment set up and extended discussion as needed. Once you set a specific schedule please email me right away and I'll find a room for your presentation. Send the same email out to all three committee members.
Here is a sample of what you may want to say...
----
I am one of the outreach students who will be presenting my culminating
presentation to my graduate committee later this semester. I am trying
to
set up a specific time for my presentation that will work with your
schedules. Here are three times that would work with me...
Wednesday, April 9 2:00 - 3:30
Friday, April 11 1:00 - 2:30
Monday, April 14 11:00 - 12:30
Would you please let me know if one or more of these times works for you? Once I get the feedback from all my committee members I will confirm a time. I will the give our appointment time to Professor Dee Child and he will find a location for us. Thanks.

Culminating Exam Schedule
The schedule for your culminating presentations is now in the hands of our faculty for their review. I've done some major adjustments based on schedules and I'm sure we'll have to do a bit more tweaking before it is complete. I'll have our finished schedule to you by next week. Right now the dates are afternoons on April 9, 11, 16, 18. I'll keep you posted next week.

Participating in Graduation Exercises
Greetings Outreach Students! As you know, most of you are scheduled to finish your graduate program at the end of Summer semester. You can participate in graduation exercises at the end of this (Spring) semester by emailing me to let me know you would like to do so. I will then send the graduate school a memo indicating that you are approved to participate in Spring commencement, but graduate in Summer. The graduate school needs the memo from me at the BEGINNING of this semester - NOW OR VERY SOON. So, please let me know. Thanks to Kellie for getting this information from the graduate school and relaying it on to me.

Class Location
For your outreach class tomorrow night all students that were supposed to attend Prof. Simonsmeier's class on campus last semester should attend the campus for Dr. Blair's class as well. He'll be in Room 3 with the possibility of moving to a smaller room once you're there. This class will NOT include the on-campus grad students --- just you cool Outreachers.

Continuous Registration Fee
The following information comes from a Memo from the Graduate School:
"The following recent Graduate Council action will affect your graduate students. Please forward this important information on to your faculty and to your graduate students so they are aware of these changes.
"After discussion and a review of what other graduate schools require, the Graduate Council approved an increase in the Continuous Registration Fee from $15 to $100. With this increase we hope to encourage students in their timely completion of degree programs. The CRF is designed for students who will not be on campus or using university resources for one or more semesters, but plan to return to their program of studies in the near future. This will be effective for Spring 2008 forward. Graduate students will still need to obtain a memo from the department indicating that they will be using continuous registration and, along with the payment, have it sent to the graduate studies office when they participate in continuous registration.
"As a reminder please also remember that the Results of Examination form must be turned in by faculty member or departmental staff member. It can not be delivered by the student."

Welcome To a New Semester
Greetings Outreach Students! Welcome to a new semester! I hope you all got a chance to breathe deeply during the break and also ski!!!!! Now we're all back for another semester with great attitudes and enthusiasm!
If you have had any problems or questions registering this semester please let me know right away. I'm going to have Brynne check on all your registrations later today.
I'm in the process of scheduling your culminating presentations. It's a bit tricky to get all your committee members available at the same time but we're working on it.
Please make sure you are up to date with Chad on your clinic hours. We're pushing to have you all completed by the end of summer semester.
Have a nice day!
