COMD-DE Fall Party

For: Faculty, Staff, Students & Significant Others
Date: Wednesday September 3
Time: 6:30 ­ 8:30 PM
Place: Dee and Bonnie Child's back yard and/or house (directions below)
Activities: dinner and socializing, then the annual faculty/staff versus students volleyball tournament
What To Bring: yourself and significant others, guitars, lawn chairs, blankets, etc. Food will be provided
RSVP: sign-up sheets are at the main office. Please sign up or have someone else sign you up no later than Tuesday, Sept. 1.


1. From the Lillywhite (COMD-DE) Building drive west to 800 East.
2. Turn North (right) and drive about 4 miles until you have to stop at a stop sign (in Hyde Park).
3. Turn right (east) and drive to the next intersection (400 East in Hyde Park).
4. Turn left and drive about 8 blocks until you see a street sign that says "450 North". You'll also see a handwritten "Child" sign.
5. Turn east (right) and drive up the hill to the next intersection.
6. Turn south (right) and around a little bend and drive up the hill to the next intersection (575 East).
7. Turn right and follow the road about 1/4 mile until you see a 2-story grey house on the west side of the road and a "Child" sign.

Scholarship Available

Need $$ for school? There is some T.H. Bell Scholarship money available for students who qualify.

Requirements: Must be a Utah resident, at last a 3.0 GPA, at least 2 semesters of school left. Priority goes to graduate students.

Conditions: For every semester you receive the scholarship you must agree to work in Utah's schools for 1/2 year (paid position).

Fee Payment Deadline

DON’T LOSE YOUR CLASSES

We would like to remind you that fee payment deadline is August 15, 2008 at 11:59 pm. All classes will be dropped if you don’t pay by that date.

We strongly encourage you to pay your tuition online to avoid long lines. In order to pay you need to:

Remember, Utah State University only accepts electronic check, Discover and MasterCard payments online.

If you would like to make payment arrangements, you must come into the Registrar’s Office, TSC 246, Monday thru Thursday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm or Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and complete a tuition installment plan. On this plan you must pay 50% of your tuition plus a $50.00 fee. The remaining 50% is paid over the next two months.

Please take care of your tuition by the August 15th deadline to avoid losing your classes. Thank you again for choosing Utah State University. Go Aggies!

New CIL Policies

Starting the first day of Fall 2008, you need to have the CILs passed before you earn 60 USU credits or you will be assessed a $30 late penalty. "

Graduation Reception

We are hosting a graduation reception on Saturday the 3rd from 11:30-1;00 for graduating seniors in the Lillywhite Building. All seniors should get their cash or checks made out to COMD to Shanna by Monday of finals week. The cost is $5 for 2, $10 for 4 or $20 for larger families. We will also have cold drinks after the graduate ceremony on the 2nd and we urge all graduate students to bring their families to the building to tours and to meet the faculty. They should go to the College reception in the CEHS building directly after graduation and then come to the Lillywhite building.

COMD 2600 is now in the registration system so students can register for it using the CRN of 48579. The class is scheduled MWF 1:30 - 2;20 in FAV 262.

CEHS Education Council

The College of Education and Human Services (CEHS) is inviting students to apply to become members of the CEHS Education Council. Students on the council would be working with other students in CEHS involved in planning Education Week, monthly college service/social activities, fund-raising, etc. The council meets one time every other week for about an hour. For an application please pick up a yellow sheet at the front desk in the COMD Department. Applications are due Friday, April 18. Attention Undergraduate Students!

If you need both a Quantitative Intensive AND Depth Science course you could take ECE 3260 "Science of Sound" that would meet both requirements with one course. The only catch is that you have to have had Math 1050 OR take the math placement test and test out of 1050. There are several other classes listed that meet both requirements as well (with DSC/QI next to the course number). The Depth Life and Physical Sciences list is on age 67 in the Summer 08 Bulletin and about page 100 in the other bulletins (fall, spring). Good luck.

Undergraduate Students:

Please set an appointment to review your registration for your next semesters with your advisor. Dee Child will be gone April 3 - 11 so you should meet with him soon. Sign up for an appointment on the sheet outside his office. There have been some minor adjustments in the schedule of COMD classes that you will want to review with him. Some of the COMD classes for Fall Semester may not show up online in Banner (online registration) yet. Keep checking Banner from time to time for updates. We will also post the CRN#s, times and locations for classes on this webpage if they do not show up in Banner, as they come available.

For upcoming Juniors, please make sure you register for the following classes for Fall Semester (2008) unless you have already taken the courses:

Multicultural Messiah

We want to invite you to the 7th annual production of George F. Handel’s Messiah presented in English, Spanish and American Sign Language.

This is truly a unique cultural event, sponsored by the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education and Cache Community Connections. This year’s concert series will be held in the Ellen Eccles Theater in Logan, March 28th and 29th. We will have over 100 singers, 50 instrumentalists and 20 theatrical interpreters for the Deaf. Volunteer performers come from as far away as Springville in Utah County. This year we are adding an educational family matinee on March 29th that will provide insight into the life and times of Handel, concert etiquette, Baroque music, Deaf culture and much more. The matinee might also be appropriate for senior citizens who prefer concerts during daylight hours. Please come and enjoy this one-of-a-kind cultural experience.

Proceeds from the concert series support our annual international humanitarian hearing healthcare mission where doctoral students in audiology and faculty provide services to underprivileged men, women and children. Last year we saw over 300 patients and fit over 40 hearing aids in Mexico.

Graduation

Graduation will Be May 2nd and 3rd. Graduate School exercises will be May 2nd. Graduates will meet at the USU Fieldhouse at 12:30 and will march in a processional to the USU Spectrum starting at 1:00. Graduation exercises will begin at 1:30. This is where graduating grad students will march across the stage and get their diplomas. Saturday the processional for undergraduate students (and graduate students as well if they choose to participate) will begin at approximately 9:00 and the USU graduation exercises will begin at approximately 9:30 or 10:00. Our College graduation exercise where our undergraduates get their diplomas will begin at 2:00 in the USU Spectrum. You will be receiving additional information about other graduation activities, how to get caps and gowns, etc. from the university in the future.

CEHS Graduate Students

Jeri Brunson, the Graduate Student Senate President, sits on the ASUSU Executive Council. The Tier II committee is currently working on money allocations for the coming year. Jeri would like student input from our Graduate Students on where we'd like the money to go. There are several proposals on the table and a survey would help narrow down the prospects.

More Information About Math Placement Policy

Students who are juniors this year and are planning to go into Audiology have been advised to take Statistics 1040 as soon as possible if they have not already taken it. USU's new math placement policy will likely require that you take the math placement test if it has been longer than one year since you have had a math class. In the event that you are not able to get into Stat 1040 until Spring Semester 2009 because of the math placement policy, the Audiology Committee will allow you to graduate without having Psyc 2800 (Psychological Statistics). In that unlikely situation you would likely have to take Psyc 2800 as part of your graduate program.

Attention Undergraduate Students...
As you know, a new math placement policy was implemented at Utah State University last summer. You are required to have taken the prerequisite courses within one year of the time you wish to take for your math or statistics courses.

You should review the math placement policy that was implemented at USU last summer. It is located at http://www.usu.edu/policies/pdf/MPATL.pdf
If you have not already done so, please meet with your advisor to make sure your plans for taking the math placement test (if necessary) and math and statistics classes are in place.

Education Week

Next week is Education Week. The activities are for all CEHS students (not just undergraduate students)! On Monday in the TSC Ballroom, there will be stands set up for Graduate Students to display their research posters during the Quiz bowl & Aggie Ice Cream. Come and show what the CEHS Graduate Students are doing!!! (If a graduate student can not be there, they can arrange to drop off and pick up posters for display only.)

Below is an outline of the weeks activities:

Quiz Bowl * The quiz bowl will take place in the west side of the TSC Ballroom from 11:30-12:30 pm. * * We will have Deans vs. Department Heads and Professors vs. Students. The winners of each will then compete with each other * The grad students will have a Graduate Research Poster Session display in the east ballroom from 11:30-1:00 pm * Set up posters from 10:00-11:00 am

Multicultural Messiah Rehearsals

Rehearsals for the 7th annual production of George F. Handel’s Messiah presented in English, Spanish and American Sign Language begin Sunday, January 20th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Dansante Building (59 S 100 W). If you have sung in choral ensembles and have a desire to learn this great masterpiece, come and join with us. Tell others. This is truly a unique opportunity.

Continuous Registration Fee

The following information comes from a Memo from the Graduate School:

"The following recent Graduate Council action will affect your graduate students. Please forward this important information on to your faculty and to your graduate students so they are aware of these changes.

"After discussion and a review of what other graduate schools require, the Graduate Council approved an increase in the Continuous Registration Fee from $15 to $100. With this increase we hope to encourage students in their timely completion of degree programs. The CRF is designed for students who will not be on campus or using university resources for one or more semesters, but plan to return to their program of studies in the near future. This will be effective for Spring 2008 forward. Graduate students will still need to obtain a memo from the department indicating that they will be using continuous registration and, along with the payment, have it sent to the graduate studies office when they participate in continuous registration.

"As a reminder please also remember that the Results of Examination form must be turned in by faculty member or departmental staff member. It can not be delivered by the student."
