The Graduate Student Senate is excited to be offering scholarships again this year! Despite earlier problems with funding, Sydney Peterson and the President's office really came through for graduate students and made this possible.
We have funding to give twenty scholarships of $4,000 to qualified graduate students. We learned a lot from our experience giving the awards last year and have made a lot of changes to the process. Below you will find the application and the FAQs for the scholarship. The documents will also be available through the GSS website - http://www.usu.edu/usugss/ , as well as complete information about the decision process and rules the GSS follows in handling the applications. Feel free to contact me, your GSS Department Representative, or your GSS College Senator if you have any questions. If you're unsure about who your GSS representatives are, please contact me and I will get you that information.

We have had a few new and improved changes at the Graduate School that we would like to make you aware of. First of all, we have a new website. It is now www.usu.edu/graduateschool
Our letters of recommendation are now electronic as well. The student gives us their recommender’s e-mail addresses. We send a form directly to the recommender, and they send it directly back to us. Please do not give out paper copies of the recommendation forms.
We do not have our gradsch@cc.usu.edu account anymore. Please direct students with questions to our website. There is a form they can fill out that will be sent to the direct contact person in our office, so that the student’s question does not have to be forwarded to a lot of people before it can get answered.
Here are a few reminders: we only need one copy of each transcript sent, our application fee is $55 for both International and Domestic students, and all students fill out the same application.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!!

If students answer "yes" to either of the 2 questions that the online program asks then the system will kick them out and they will have to submit their finger print request manually. This means, they will have to submit the finger print release form along with a fee and an explanation as to why they answered yes to the questions and to explain what the reason is.
Also it is very important that they choose the correct methods for finger printing. If they live in the State of Utah or will be in the state in the next 60 days, then have them request to do the live scan process. They are given a list of the 17 sites in the state that they can go to and get their live scan prints done. They should only go to one of the sites since they are connected to our system. Going to a police station is no guarantee that I will receive the results. Most police stations may have a scanning machine but they are only used to print off cards and not to submit finger prints electronically.
If you have students that are out of the state have them then request finger print cards and I will be sending those out to them. Also it is very important that they select the correct university which they are getting the finger prints done for. Since I will be sending out a list of those who have requested finger prints to your universities that is the only way I know to which names to send to which university.
Since the system is still new there will still be times when they can not get in and do their request. Please tell them to keep trying since there are so many people trying to get onto the system at the same time it can not keep up.

High-needs (Title 1) schools have the hardest time recruiting and retaining SLPs. ASHA has been advocating for legislation to include SLPs in the current federal student loan forgiveness program, which provides $17,500 in student loan forgiveness to math, science, and special education teachers for working in a Title 1 school for five consecutive years. Including SLPs in this program would provide an incentive for new SLPs to work with children in high-needs schools.
Your Senator sits on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, and thus, can play a very critical and local role in advancing this issue for school-based SLPs. The HELP Committee is expected to consider a bill to reauthorize the provisions of the Higher Education Act soon. They need to include the provisions of H.R.1394 in this reauthorization bill. H.R.1394, the Helping Our Students Communicate Act of 2007, would extend the benefits of the existing math, science and special education teacher federal loan forgiveness program to qualified school-based SLPs.
Please take a moment and send your Senators an email urging them to include H.R. 1394 (the student loan forgiveness legislation) in the Higher Education Act by visiting our website at: http://capwiz.com/asha2/issues/alert/?alertid=9752521&type=ta . Email your senator now! Contact Neil Snyder, ASHA’s Director of Federal Advocacy, at 800-498-2071 ext 4257 or nsnyder@asha.org if you have any questions.

Your scholarships for the next school year have been processed through the Dean's Office in the College of Education and Human Services. When you register for Fall Semester, the total tuition will be reduced by the amount of your scholarship. If the reduction does not immediately show up when you register, you should wait for a few hours and check the total again. If it has still not been reduced, or if you have any other questions about the scholarship, please contact Amy in the Dean's Office. Her email address is Amy.Wilburg@usu.edu.

The Registrar's Office has made changes in policy that allows a student to take courses in both on campus and in the Regional campuses, without being penalized, by charging the first credit twice, plateau, or the additional fees. However this can not be programmed into Banner at this time. Therefore we are putting a message on Access that tells the student to contact Regional Campuses at 797-3104 or to e-mail us at registrar@usu.edu to make that adjustment. We hope in the future to have this automated.
In addition all the front counter personnel, both on campus and in the centers, know to watch for this and report that adjustments are needed. We will also run a report during the semester to try and find these students and adjust their accounts. Once the adjustment is made we are placing a hold on the student's account to prevent them from changing their registration, since that would necessitate a change to the adjustments we have made. If they need to make changes to their schedule they will need to contact our offices directly so we can make the appropriate changes to their assessment. This does not affect any fixed rate course.

In a move that has left educators, test administrators, and potential test candidates astounded, Educational Testing Services (ETS) abruptly announced last week that they will cancel the 2007 rollout of the revised GRE test program. All planned changes to the General GRE program have been abandoned, despite several years of focused effort toward that end. A press release with more detail is available at the GRE website, www.gre.org.
Please disregard the March 27, 2007 memo from Career Services-Testing regarding changes coming to the GRE in 2007. The exam will remain in its current format and will be administered on the current, continuous-testing schedule indefinitely.
By way of explanation, ETS suggests that examinee difficultly in accessing the exam was the primary motivating factor behind their decision. The drastic limiting of test dates with the concomitant logistical problem of accommodating equal examinee volume on far fewer dates proved to be too great an obstacle, and the test company decided to scrap the new program.
Please inform potential GRE candidates that all upcoming changes to the GRE program they may have heard about (to both content and schedule) will no longer take place. You may give them our number, 435-797-1004, or refer them to our website, www.usu.edu/testing_services, for current information on the GRE test schedule and registration.

ASHA Award Programs for Students and New Faculty Are Now Open
To help foster leadership and promote careers in academia and research, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has created several exciting award opportunities.
These opportunities are available to undergraduate, Master's, AuD, and PhD students enrolled in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) programs; postdoctoral fellows; and new faculty.
The Minority Student Leadership Program is open to all students** at the levels listed above, who wish to enhance their leadership skills, interact with leaders in the professions, and learn how their association gets its work accomplished. Now in its 9th year, this program has given over 250 students insight into their own leadership abilities along with a better understanding of how exceptional leaders effect change in their professional association. The MSLP has empowered these students to take risks to meet their own challenges.
**All students are encouraged to apply; however, preference will be given to racial/ethnic minority students. Visit the MSLP FAQs for more information.
The Academic & Research Careers SPARC Award, the Advancing Academic-Research Careers AARC Award, the Student Research Travel Award, and the Research Mentoring-Pair Travel Award were all instituted to increase and retain CSD scientists and faculty. The SPARC and AARC Awards were developed as part of ASHA's Focused Initiative on the PhD Shortage in Higher Education. The SPARC Award is given to undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing an academic & research career in the field of CSD. The AARC Award is given to new faculty in higher education to support and facilitate their academic and research endeavors in the field of communication sciences and disorders (CSD). ASHA developed the Student Research Travel Award to encourage budding scientists to pursue careers in science and research. This award is available to undergraduate, Master's and Doctoral students who are the first authors on a paper. The Research Mentoring-Pair Travel Award is designed to foster the professional development of students, practitioners and emerging scientists who have expressed an interest in research in communication sciences and disorders. These new scientists will attend the 17th Annual Research Symposium, Genetic and Biological Pathways Underpinning Communication Disorders Across the Lifespan, at the 2007 ASHA Convention in Boston, MA.
Visit 2007 ASHA Award Programs for application, deadline, and submission information.

Due to decreasing funds for the T.H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan Program, beginning Fall Semester 2007 each student will have $3,500 or less (we won’t have our final dollar figure yet) for the entire year, 2007-2008. beginning with fall semester to cover tuition and fees. Unless the Board of Regents receives additional funds from the legislature, this will be the plan.
