Administrative/Supervisory Certificate
Utah State University
Internship Requirements
The total internship experience must be at least 450 clock hours; typically 225 clock hours each in an elementary and secondary setting. The internship at each level must include:
- A significant experience with Special Education;
- A log of hours spent in internship activities (Minimum three-hour blocks of time with students and teachers during the regular school day should comprise the bulk of the internship experience.);
- A written evaluation report to the internship supervisor every two weeks;
- A written summary of the internship experiences as they relate to the ISLLC 2008 standards (Please use the enclosed grid.);
- A final evaluation of the internship by your mentor principal (form enclosed). Your mentor principal will need to send the end of the semester evaluation to your university supervisor, Clark Puffer; and
- Completion of the internship seminar.
The internship is required by the state, and is a significant part of the training for administrative/supervisory certification. It is anticipated that students will intern in successful schools and become involved in those leadership activities which make schools successful. Successful schools are characterized by:
1. High expectations of students by the administration and faculty with emphasis on learning.
2. High expectations of the school by parents and students.
3. Appropriate level of program difficulty.
4. Positive classroom and school climates.
5. Appropriate emphasis of time on task.
6. Frequent monitoring and assessment of student progress.
7. Frequent and appropriate feedback.
8. Clearly established learning criterion, and materials aligned to those criterion.
9. Principals who are involved with leadership of the school’s curriculum.
The majority of the internship should be focused on the nine characteristics above. The intern should also experience some of the managerial and maintenance functions associated with administering a modern school.
